Cognitive Behavioural Training / Therapy / Coaching EdinburghStuart is a Psychotherapist, Counsellor and Life Coach who provides CBT in his practice, often as an additional form of therapy alongside counselling or psychotherapy support. Denise is a counsellor and life coach who is also a mental health support worker and who uses CBT in much of her work. Both are professionally registered, qualified and insured and both adhere to appropriate National Occupationa Standards. Both therapists are integrative and combine eastern psychology such as mindfulness into their work.
CBT in only ONE form of psychotherapy, one the NHS love to recommend. As they say, if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. We recommend integrated therapists with many tools.
Stuart is also trained in forms of Cognitive Behavioural Analysis (which looks at deeper issues like long term depression and anxiety) including the CBASP model.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy / Training / Coaching in Edinburgh
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy / Training, or CBT / CBC as it is usually known, is a special form of Psychological therapy. Like Life Coaching, personal development training or NLP, it is often provided in a training format. Therefore some practitioners may consider themselves "clinical counsellors" who provide CBT, others may prefer to consider themselves "trainers" who empower their clients while still working through deeper issues.
Stuart and Denise are Life Coaches and Solution Focused Holistic Therapists who also have qualifications at levels 3 and 4 in Psychotherapy and Counselling. Having completed this professional training guides and informs practice, although implementation remains coaching, empowerment and solution focused. Denise is a NACHP and CCC registered counsellor, Stuart is a NCP (Fellow) and NACHP registered psychotherapist and counsellor.
We adhere to appropriate National Occupational Standards, carry professional insurance and support voluntary regulation of therapists. We are both subject to regulation in therapy. Both therapists area CNHC registered hypnotherapist (voluntary regulation of hypnotherapy). Both therapists are registered on both CNHC and FHT PSA Accredited Registers. Professional Standards Authority Accredited Registers are for healthcare practitioners not subject to statutory regulation.
This web page is not meant to give an in depth or technical description, but instead a basic idea for the layperson considering CBT.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a very practical form of therapy. Like Life Coaching it aims to make discernible changes in a client's behaviour and lifestyle in order to help them.
CBT is widely recognised as a scientifically tested and verified psychotherapeutical method of overcoming common emotional problems.
With CBT you identify errors in the way you may be thinking or perceiving things, and from there learning to adopt more helpful thoughts, attitudes, philosophies and beliefs.
CBT is the primary recommended psychological therapy for a wide range of conditions by NICE. It is best combined with other therapies however to provide a deeper and more meaningful form of support.
In lay-mans terms this is our perception and identification of things around us. We may have faulty perception for a number of reasons. This may for example be due to obsession or trauma colouring the way we see things.
This is simply the way be act, behave and react to what we have already noticed going on around us. Again we can learn to act inappropriately for a number of reasons, often again because of trauma or obsession.
The process of understanding, relearning and retraining in order to change these errors from occurring and having a negative impact on us. Care is taken to have a non-judgmental attitude. The client is helped to challenge their own perceptions and behaviours. It is most certainly NOT about the therapist telling you how to act and think!
What to expect from Cognitive Behavioural therapy in Edinburgh?
You will be encouraged to examine, challenge and understand your perceptions and behaviours. Where appropriate you will be set exercises and challenges to help you change these for more positive thoughts and behaviours.
It is quite normal to expect "homework" from your therapist. Indeed Stuart uses his own award winning training pack with clients, formulated from real life practice over more than 12 years.
What conditions are commonly treated with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at the Edinburgh Clinics
CBT is effective in a very wide range of issues and is often recommended by NICE. Some common issues however are:
Please note this is not an exhaustive list.
During 2015 Stuart and Denise carried out extensive continuous professional development specifically in the area of analysis. Stuart completed post qualification competency training in CBASP (cognitive behavioural analysis system of psychotherapy) and both Stuart and Denise trained in clinical application of mindfulness with depression and mental health. Both trainings were provided by NHS employed clinicians and were run at local universities.
Combined with long term ongoing training in mental health and health provision topics through the Open University, and with other specialist training such as PODS training in dissociative disorders, both therapists are committed to practical and applied training for mental health conditions.
Mental health treatment is based around methods recommended in NICE guidelines, and those fully researched as effective such as CBASP. More information on both adherence to NICE guidelines and on underpinning research please visit our other site www.psychoanalysis.center
