Martial Arts for persons with Mental Health issues or low self confidence.

Classes have run every term since Sept 18th 2008. Beginners are still welcome. We have about 5 places remaining.

Next class first week in January 2010

A new service has been launched offering self defence and martial arts training to people with a range of managed mental health and personal self esteem issues.

Typical issues include:
- Depression
- Mood disorders
- Low self confidence
- Low self esteem
- History of suffering abuse or violence
- Anxiety
- Panic attacks

The service aims to provide a supportive environment where students can learn to increase their personal confidence alongside their fitness and self defence skills. Gradings (belt exams) will be kept to a minimum, and continuous assessment methods will be used to reduce exam stress and nerves.

Safety and mental health

Students must maintain medical support and supervision for their issues, and must not attend if their condition is in crisis (anger, depression, mania etc). The service aims to push the student at a pace they can manage, and therefore increase confidence through SIT (stress innoculation therapy) related methods, while maintaining a supportive, safe and professional environment.

Adults only -  not suited for persons with physical disability.

Style of Martial Art

The style of self defence and martial arts is freestyle. This combines elements of Japanese, Chinese and Thai martial arts in a freestyle context. There is a slightly higher Karate and kickboxing / Thai boxing content than any other element. Gradings will be in "Freestyle Karate".  Various sparing / trainign styles are used, depending on the level of the student, from Semi-contact (for beginners), through full contact and Thai boxing, to Mixed Martial Arts for Senior students.  The training styles used are used by students who have achieved competence at a sufficient level to use them safely.

Who is the Instructor?

The sylabus is an existing accredited sylabus, and students will be registered and insured through the British National Martial Art Association (BNMAA). Stuart, the instructor is a 5th Dan BNMAA registered instructor, and a fully qualified therapist.  Stuart also has an NVQ Level IV in Training and Development (to TDLB standards) in the Industrial Context of Complementary Health Education, Stress Management Education and Martial Art Education, and an ASET Level 3 Chi Kung award.

Where and when are the lessons?
Salisbury centre: Link to centre website and a Google map (copyright acknowledged) via the about us tab at the top of this page.

Thursdays: 18.45 to 19.45, but please attend from 18.30 since unless you pay term by term, you will need to pay your weekly subs at the Office.

Cost: Paid weekly is £5, paid per term of classes (14 classes) is £60. This is paid to the Salisbury centre direct.

Additional Costs: Everyone doing a Martial Art needs personal liability insurance, and depending on your needs this costs between £5 to £10 per year.

Clothing and Equipment: Needs are kept to a minimum. Initially simply wear comfortable loose clothing suitable for exercise, such as jogging bottoms, clean trainers and a T-Shirt. If you decide to continue then you will need to purchase a training suit, either from a shop, or via us (usually MUCH cheaper from us). Do not dop this until you have tried a lesson, and please ensure you check our club uniform and colours.

Gradings: If you decide to do grading assessments (optional) these do carry a small admin charge. This is optional and will not apply until after the first term.

Will there also be lessons for persons without mental health conditions?

Quite possibly. The main objective is to launch the specialist group first, but depending on demand, additional classes may be provided. In the meantime there are classes available in Edinburgh from an allied club, details HERE

How do I join up? or register interest?

Please ask any questions or register your interest in the new classes by emailing us HERE   You can also contact the Salisbury Centre direct to sign up for the full term.

We are proud to be registered with the BNMAA
